Does anyone remember anything about the movie Entrapment? It is universally known as the Catherine Zeta-Jones butt through lasers movie, but that was like a two-minute scene in a film that last nearly two hours. Something else had to have taken place.
Spoiler alert: nothing else interesting happens in Entrapment. The reason it is recognized as the Catherine Zeta-Jones butt through lasers movie is because that’s the only memorable part. Everything else is just so utterly boring and forgettable.
Which brings me to the worst part of Entrapment. It featured total bait and switch marketing. The trailer got you hyped for some sexy, exciting action movie and what you got was a mild snooze fest with a wildly unbelievable love angle. I mean Zeta-Jones falling for Sean Connery. What are we doing here?
Let’s not forget just how big the trailer for Entrapment was. It is all we talked about for a week in high school. Water coolers across America were abuzz with chatter about the Catherine Zeta-Jones butt through lasers movie. All of this distracted from the fact the film was rated PG-13. It was always going to suck.
And it was closer to being rated PG than R. There were a few swears, limited fighting and nothing sexy at all apart from that one scene. It was basically a movie that dads could take their kids to and not feel guilty about or get nagged by their wife.
Of course, the public is just as much to blame for Entrapment being bad as are the film’s cast, directors and producers. What were our expectations for it in the first place? It was a PG-13 movie starring an over-the-hill Sean Connery. The only reason anyone went to see it was a trailer featuring that five-second clip of Zeta-Jones crawling through lasers in tight pants. In a way, we got what we deserved.

No lasers here
The posters for Entrapment are riddled with laser beams. And you probably remember Zeta-Jones navigating all those red lasers in the trailer. But those aren’t actually lasers. It’s red string. That’s right. The Catherine Zeta-Jones butt through lasers movie doesn’t actually feature her maneuvering past any lasers.

The Catherine Zeta-Jones butt through lasers movie could have had more butts and lasers
I’m not saying this would have saved the movie, but when Catherine Zeta-Jones does her whole sexy thief routine, it was just a practice run. There is another scene later on when she does the thing through invisible lasers. We could have received an encore performance of Entrapment’s only memorable moment.
Instead, the director chose to basically skim past this part focusing on Connery holding a remote control. I literally just watch the movie and don’t recall what exactly was happening here. It was bad. Give the people what they want and what they wanted was more Catherine Zeta-Jones carefully moving past lasers, or I guess red strings, in tight pants.
