Who is Dalvin Cook’s handcuff? The Minnesota Vikings have perhaps the clearest backfield hierarchy in the NFL which means this is a straightforward question to answer. And considering the fragile Cook has never played more than 14 games in a season, it’s one you need to know.

Dalvin Cook’s handcuff continues to be Alexander Mattison who has at least 96 carries each season since being drafted in 2019. He has drawn the start in the six contests the former Florida State player has missed over the past two seasons and will do the same once more in 2022.

However, the situation behind Mattison has gotten a little more intriguing. The explosive Kene Nwangwu continues to get more work with the running backs after returning a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns last season.

Nwangwu isn’t a threat to supplant Mattison yet, but he is definitely someone who could move up the depth chart as the year progresses. And if Cook’s backup is ineffective, his leash may be shorter than in year’s past when Mike Boone was behind him.

Is Dalvin Cook’s handcuff worth stashing?

Is water wet or ice cold? Dalvin Cook’s handcuff is a must own given his injury history and the production this role tends to produce. Mattison lacks the elite ability of his teammate, but he has posted solid fantasy football numbers when called upon.

That being said, keep an eye on Nwangwu. He has shown an explosiveness that Mattison lacks, although his vision and feel for the position are a work in progress. If he can continue to improve those traits, the 2021 draft pick may earn some touches should either Cook or Mattison find themselves sidelined.

All things considered, Mattison should be owned in all leagues regardless of Cook’s status. And if Dalvin is injured, there is no harm in taking a flyer on Nwangwu.
