TCU belonged in the National Championship Game; Georgia was just better

TCU National Championship Game
It was an ugly result, but TCU was worthy of playing in the National Championship Game

The most annoying thing about sports media, Facebook commenters and Twitter is the hindsight posse trying to make themselves look smart by peddling stone cold takes to no one in particular. The latest example of this is some claiming TCU wasn’t worthy of being in the National Championship Game.

Sure, this was a blowout. In fact, it was the most lopsided loss in bowl history. That doesn’t mean a damn thing, though. The Georgia Bulldogs were incredibly good on this day. On the other hand, TCU played what was perhaps their worst possible game. This was a one in a hundred result, not a case for them being overwhelmed.

The Horned Frogs and the Big XII fully deserved to be in the College Football Playoff this year. No one said Oklahoma didn’t belong when LSU hung 63 points on them. If anything, the size of the loss was more to do with them leaving it all on the field trying to score as opposed to trying to keep the score line respectable. That’s commendable.

There are two other factors to consider here. Firstly, does anyone think Alabama or USC would have fared any better? Georgia already crushed Tennessee during the regular season. Michigan had their shot and blew it. If your argument is that TCU didn’t belong, then who was worthy of replacing them? After watching this year’s bowls, Oregon State probably has the strongest claim.

Beyond that, the College Football Playoff National Championship felt more like a fluke. And trying to make a point using hindsight based on a fluke is utterly ridiculous. Georgia had an exceptional gameplan, a ton of talent and came into this game extremely focused. TCU had no plan and appeared to be a team new to this stage. They got down early, desperately tried to claw points back and things turned ugly.

It was a one-off in which no conclusions should be drawn from. Just like when the Bulldogs almost lost to Mizzou earlier in the year. Sometimes you don’t play your best game. Unfortunately for the Horned Frogs, it happened to them during the National Championship. That doesn’t mean they didn’t belong. It’s simply a thing that happens in college football and all sports for that matter.
