Why not? is a feature on The Touchback exploring bets with longer odds that could plausibly happen. This doesn’t mean these wagers are locks. They are simply ones where you can justify the risk. Today, we look at why you should bet on Florida State to win the National Championship at +2000.
This could be the most wide-open season in college football history. At least since the introduction of the BCS. No one looks to be a lock to reach the College Football Playoff. The usual suspects have questions at quarterback and elsewhere that make you think an outsider truly has a shot. That’s why we like Florida State to win the National Championship at +2000 (Odds via Bet MGM).
If you look back at the past four champions, they all share a few similar traits. For starters, each side had experience at the quarterback position. Joe Burrow, Mac Jones and Stetson Bennett had been around the block before leading their respective sides to glory.
Second, these programs all had difference makers on offense. Some obviously had more talent than others, but Georgia, Alabama and LSU were equipped with several gamebreakers who could score on any play.
Defense, on the other hand, was hit or miss. Kirby Smart coached a pair of elite units. Alabama had a lot of players drafted but was gouged quite a bit. The Tigers turned it on when they needed to in 2019.

This brings us to the 2023 Florida State Seminoles, a program that shares many of those same characteristics. It all starts under center with Jordan Travis. The Second Team All-ACC quarterback is, without a doubt, the best passer in the ACC and should continue to improve with another year of experience under his belt.
His supporting cast is exciting as well. Johnny Wilson is right up there with Marvin Harrison Jr. in terms of being uncoverable. Mycah Pittman entered the transfer portal but the team still has a stable of tools-y, highly recruited players behind him.
Leading rusher Trey Benson is back along with Lawrance Toafili. This duo flew under the radar but was productive when their blocking held up. Meanwhile, tight end Jaheim Bell has joined the program from South Carolina.
Florida State’s defense has a lot more question marks. They did look good at times last season. And they also looked really bad on occasion. If they can cobble together a respectable unit, anything is possible.
Should you bet on Florida State to win the National Championship at +2000
A bet on Florida State to win the National Championship at +2000 is the most exciting wager you can lay down at the moment. It remains to be seen if they put everything together. But the pieces are certainly there to make a College Football Playoff run.
