NFL schedule release videos are a stupid waste of money

NFL schedule release videos are stupid. Sure, as a concept, they are relatively harmless. There is nothing wrong with pushing out some promotional material in theory. The reality, however, is very different. Teams insist on churning out overproduced videos that seemingly cost an arm and a leg to publish.

What I don’t understand is how owners and teams so hard up for money afford to make something that is totally useless. Seriously, isn’t that what we are told every time Rodger Goodell proposes another blatant cash grab? The NFL must bring in more revenue.

We need a 17th game despite stupid, uneven scheduling. We need two Monday night games even though they start way too early on the west coast and end way too late on the east coast. We need Thursday games, although the on-field product is crap and players are more likely to get hurt. And so on and so forth.

By the way, these are all framed as being done for the fans. It’s as if we are being done a favor. That is simply laughable. Ticket prices aren’t cheaper. NFL Sunday Ticket costs more now than ever before as does most team merchandise. The only ones who have benefitted from these schemes have been the owners.

This brings us back to why NFL schedule release videos are stupid. Teams are spending tens of thousands of dollars on a piece of content that will be buried on their timeline in a few days. They are hiring celebrities and animators to assist with these productions. It’s all a bit much.

Especially considering owners who greenlit these release videos can’t spare a dime when it comes time to negotiate with the NFL Players Association on a new labor deal. Are you kidding me? The league has tried to screw football players out of benefits for decades now but has no problem wasting money on something solely designed to impress a bunch of losers on Twitter.

Before some of you out there start with your uninformed financial rants, let’s make one thing perfectly clear. The difference between US$10,000 and US$10 million is nothing to a billionaire. Those who think otherwise are nothing but conservative snowflakes too stupid and lazy to think for themselves.

But I digress.

NFL schedule release videos are stupid and a colossal waste of money. It’s football ownership propaganda. A marketing tool designed to make you think teams somehow care about you when they don’t. Think about it like this.

Would you rather have some two-minute video informing you of who your favorite team will play this year or the ability to watch all those games this season without spending US$339 or whatever stupid package YouTube TV wants you to sign up for?

Exactly. And that’s why NFL schedule release videos are a stupid waste of money.
