Deuce ‘n Domino: The wrong gimmick at the wrong time

Deuce 'n Domino gimmick
Smackdown! wasn't exactly brimming with good tag teams in 2007 and 2008

Deuce ‘n Domino weren’t around for a long time, but their gimmick remains burned in the memory of anyone who watched Smackdown! between 2007 and 2008. This pair of greasers also had a manager named Cherry who came to the ring on roller skates.

As dumb as that sounds, it was somehow worse. For starters, there was never any explanation about why Deuce ‘n Domino were greasers which made the gimmick confusing. Did they just really like the era? Had they traveled from the 1950s to the future? Was it an elaborate ruse designed to befuddle opponents?

Whatever the case may have been, WWE never felt the need to tell us. Hell, maybe there was a promo where the tag team did explain the gimmick. But if it did happen, it was one of those blink-and-you-missed-it deals while they walked to the ring during a random Smackdown! episode.

Those were all the rage around this time which sucked because it meant you most likely missed any character development that wasn’t Teddy Long making tag matches or forcing others to go one-on-one with the Undertaker.

The thing about the Deuce ‘n Domino gimmick is that it felt like such a mid-1990s WWE product. Just some nonsense thrown together because a tag team needed to be something. However, no one was buying what they were selling.

The Deuce ‘n Domino gimmick highlights a low point for tag teams

In fairness to Deuce ‘n Domino, they weren’t the only WWE tag team saddled with a confusing, pointless gimmick around this time. You had Cryme Tyme; the Edgeheads, whatever the hell Paul London and Brian Kendrick were supposed to be; and Jesse and Festus, among others.

If we’re being honest, Jesse and Festus qualify for the so bad, it’s good category. Biscuits and Gravy! Anyway, WWE felt that all tag teams in 2007 and 2008 were either comedy acts or there to fill time which sucked.

However, Deuce ‘n Domino stood out amongst this wasteland for two reasons. First, the gimmick was flat-out dumb. And second, they weren’t very good at wrestling. They could have been anything and fans wouldn’t have been interested.
