Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan sign stealing scandal are not surprising. Nor is the intense media coverage of something that will take years to resolve. The most annoying aspect of the entire situation is the lack of perspective.
Cheating in sports is a byproduct of a lack of patience from fans. Losing has become so unacceptable that coaches, players and teams are better off cheating in order to win than losing their livelihood by following the rules.
This isn’t to say Jim Harbaugh shouldn’t be punished or that the Michigan sign stealing scandal is something we accept. That is not the case. However, it is crucial to understand why. If we don’t, cheating sports will continue to be an issue. And that is something no one wants.
