Austin Ekeler playing for any other team apart from the Los Angeles Chargers would be a fantasy football travesty. Unfortunately, that is very much a reality given the team has let their star running back look for a trade.
That news came after he couldn’t come to an agreement with the Chargers’ front office on a new contract. That is not particularly surprising seeing as the NFL places no value on the running back position. Instead of paying Ekeler, they are more than content letting him ply his trade elsewhere.
That sucks. Actually, sucks doesn’t even begin to describe it. An Ekeler trade would be a fantasy football travesty. In three of the past four seasons, he’s been a top-five PPR and top-10 running back. Those guys don’t grow on trees.

Who knows if that is possible playing for another franchise? Seriously, Los Angeles has built an offense around Ekeler’s unique skill set. He isn’t a guy you can just plug and play. The team has managed to showcase what the running back does well without exposing his limitations.
There is no guarantee Ekeler will be as successful playing for any other team in the NFL. That’s because a lot of what he is asked to do is unique to the Chargers. Different sides may be able or even willing to incorporate all his skills into their offense.
This is why Austin Ekeler leaving the Los Angeles Chargers would be a fantasy football travesty. We have a one-of-a-kind player in a unique offense tailored to his skills. Sure, he’ll still be a really good player. But him being a cog in an offensive machine won’t be nearly as fun as him being the machine.
No matter where he will be playing in 2023, Ekeler won’t cede his RB1 crown without a fight:

Of course, being a member of the Los Angeles Chargers would make that goal a helluva lot more realistic. Also, props to an NFL player acknowledging fantasy football. That’s a guy you want on your team, real life or fantasy.
