The Chicago Bears orange helmet is a bush league look for a bush league franchise. A team in the football wilderness finally has a uniform as utterly lost and confused as their ownership. However, that doesn’t make it good.

Chicago Bears orange helmet, what are we doing here?

When Brian Urlacher and Da Bears spent a season playing at the University of Illinois Memorial Stadium while Soldier Field was being renovated, I thought that was as close to being the Fighting Illini as the franchise could get.

Then 20 years later, they just ripped off the college’s look. The “C” and “I” letter mark are frankly interchangeable. Hell, both teams have also done away with center helmet stripes for the orange lid, although Illinois seemingly re-added theirs.

Here’s the thing, I don’t mind the proliferation of secondary helmets across the NFL. The plethora of black helmets set to see the field next season is tolerable, if a bit cliché. Throwback lids from the Falcons and Patriots are cool. The Texans red helmet is a thing.

But the Chicago Bears orange helmet is so dumb. And they know it. They have to know it given the timing of the announcement. No one rolls out anything good on a Sunday in July. This release was a classic move to bury the news until these monstrosities are used once and then never seen again like those Washington Football Team yellow jerseys from a few years back.

Chicago Bears, what are we doing here? Your franchise is already a laughingstock. All the orange helmet does is confirm no one is running the ship inside Halas Hall. And no, this has nothing to do with me being too old or not liking change. This isn’t a look designed to target merch sales among Gen Z’ers.

That is because the Chicago Bears orange helmet is plain as all hell. Of course, we really shouldn’t be surprised by the team doing something this stupid. Have you checked out their roster? It is just as poorly thought out.

Look at Roquan Smith showing off the new helmet. Judging by his expression of despair and sadness, he is equally as baffled as to what Chicago is doing.
