Every time I watch David Morales in the Needin’ U music video, I can’t help but think of my own fond memories of summer in Europe. It also makes me a bit sad that I was a decade too late to the entire dance and electronic music scene. While it was still good when I discovered it during my college years in 2009, there is no doubt nothing compares to 1998-2001.
Anyway, the vibe David Morales captures in the Needin’ U music video (watch above) is perfect. The club, the beach, the raw eroticism, the chaos and the like are perfectly represented. It is so simple and at the same time endlessly beautiful for those of us who have been there.
And while the video was shot in Ibiza, this could really be any place along the Mediterranean Sea. The Greek Isles, Dalmatian Coast, Costa del Sol and Malta all had a similar feel, although the DJs performing there are never as good as who’s playing Ibiza.
That’s a minor nitpick, however. You visit these places for the unbridled craziness on offer. Wake up at 2pm, go to the beach until 5pm, return to the hotel for some pool time, grab a nap, get ready, head out to the club around midnight and stay up until the sun rises. Life doesn’t get any better in your 20s.
David Morales allows those of us too old to hang these days a trip down memory lane with the Needin’ U music video. Look, it is probably nothing more than a bunch of random things happening to anyone who hasn’t been there in person. But those who have lived it will completely understand and appreciate this masterpiece.
I remember watching this video during winter in my 20s and getting pumped about going back come summer. Today, I turn it on when I feel like a dose of nostalgia for a time when staying up past 10pm was a realistic possibility.
What we haven’t mentioned is the song. Needin’ U is, as the Brits say, a proper banger. Some 25 years later, it still holds up against the test time. And man, things would get crazy if you ever heard it come on in one of those coastal European nightclubs.
That is pretty amazing for an anthem that took three hours to make. David Morales even admitted to Billboard the success of the song was nothing more than a fluke. That doesn’t really matter, though. Much like nights on Ibiza, details aren’t important as long as you had fun.
