We know the Los Angeles Clippers could win an NBA championship. All NBA teams can win the title in theory. Apart from the Clippers, who were always a laughing stock. Them hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy at the end of a season was about as likely as Eric Montross doing something useful on a basketball court.
Even in the Lob City era, you never really thought the Clippers were going to win it all. They couldn’t. It was one of those mysteries in life that you could understand without it needing to be explained. As Immanuel Kant would philosophize, the Clippers never being NBA champion is a thing-in-itself.
Much like Kant’s own work not sitting well with other philosophers, looking at you G.E. Schulze, some believe the LA Clippers take home the NBA Championship. With Kawhi Leonard and Paul George in the fold, the scenario looks more likely than ever before. Especially if games resume this season. But we must ask ourselves, is this a place we really want to exist?
The Los Angeles Clippers win an NBA championship and the world changes
Let’s backtrack to Kant and his thing-in-itself argument. Basically, the big German (technically he was Prussian) argues that an object is an object, although we as people don’t really know what it is, just that it exists. How does this apply to Steve Ballmer’s baby?
The Clippers are a bad basketball team. That is their inherent state of being. They may be observed winning games, but that’s only an appearance which exists outside of what the team really is. However, that changes forever if the Los Angeles Clippers win an NBA championship.
And our world changes with it. Even people who don’t know the first thing about basketball understand the LA Clippers are a joke team. We have to question everything we think we know about sports, and maybe even life, if Doc Rivers leads them to a title. Our comprehension of the world is no longer correct.
And that’s not a world we should want to live in. What’s next? The Shamrock Shake becoming available all-year round? People leaving respectful comments on those illegal sports streaming chatboxes? It’s impossible to imagine.
If the Los Angeles Clippers win an NBA championship, it’s truly the end of the world as we know it.
