Fantasy football drops for week 4: Clearing out the deadwood

Austin Hooper Fantasy football drops week 4
Austin Hooper is TE36 right now. 36! There is no reason to keep him on your roster

After three weeks of football, it’s time to clear out some deadwood on your roster. Sometimes it involves moving on a mid-round draft pick who simply isn’t producing. On other occasions, it requires you throwing in the towel on a sleeper who isn’t likely to pan out in 2020. Whatever the case may be, here is a list of fantasy football drops for week 4.

Fantasy football drops for week 4

QB – Daniel Jones, New York Giants

Daniel Jones is at the bottom of just about every single statistical category. So far this season he has thrown four interceptions and boasts a lowly QB rating of 50.1. Coming into the season, Jones was labeled a potential fantasy sleeper, but has failed to live up to the hype. The New York Giants signal caller hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in the last two games, posting scores of 7.74 points and 8.06 points in the process.

The loss of Saquon Barkley has significantly hindered his performance in 2020. With no real run threat, defensive coordinators no longer have to load the box which forces Jones to make plays with his arm behind a terrible offensive line. To add insult to injury (or should I say ‘to add injury to insult’?), Sterling Shepard was also placed on IR last week, leaving Jones with a pretty weak group of wide receivers moving forward.

RB – Mark Ingram, Baltimore Ravens

On Monday Night Football, we were blessed with the premier matchup of the season. It was Chiefs vs Ravens. Mahomes vs Jackson. And it was…well…sort of one sided. Mahomes and the Chiefs offense dominated. On the opposite side, the Ravens failed to get any rhythm going on offense. Lamar Jackson struggled in the first half and the team played from behind the whole game.

Mark Ingram remained the lead back on first and second downs. However, negative game script meant he didn’t have a lot of opportunities in the second half. He was only able to gain 30 yards on 7 rushing attempts with no receptions. While the Ravens schedule has been tough so far, it’s hard to see Ingram being start worthy as the season rolls along.

JK Dobbins has continued to be a nuisance to Ingram’s carries. Third string running back Gus Edwards also gets work here and there further cutting into his workload. The Ravens were one of the top rushing teams last season because of the amount of work Lamar Jackson puts in on the ground. It’s basically a hot-hand situation. Carries and production are not guaranteed for any Baltimore back each week and that means it is hard to predict when to put Ingram in your lineup.

WR – Chase Claypool, Pittsburgh Steelers

Chase Claypool had a great week 2, tallying three receptions for 88 yards and one touchdown. However, he only had one reception for 24 yards in week 3 and that was with Diontae Johnson getting injured early on. Claypool has struggled to get on the field, only seeing a snap share higher than 38 percent once this season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a pass heavy team, but Big Ben has not targeted the rookie all that much. And while he has been productive when on the field, he is still behind Juju Smith-Schuster, Johnson and maybe even James Washington on the depth chart. If Claypool needs to work himself up the Steelers depth chart if he’s going to be a fantasy football factor in 2020. There is no need to roster him until that happens.

TE – Austin Hooper, Cleveland Browns

As I’m writing this, it feels like I’m picking on the AFC North but that is purely coincidence, I promise! However, we need to look at Austin Hooper’s season so far. He was signed to a huge contract and was expected to come in and help take this offense to a new level. However, it has been the running game that has led the Cleveland Browns on offense so far.

Baker Mayfield has not been effective in getting his receivers the ball. Hooper has only seen 10 targets this season, amounting to seven receptions for 62 yards. He’s currently ranked 36th in points scored by a tight end and that’s with David Njoku missing the last few games. By the way, the Browns have played the Bengals and the Washington Football team during the past two weeks. Hooper is a quick fade for me right now and you should fade him as well.
