Everyone laments about the downfall of college football bowl season. It just isn’t what it used to be. And a few years ago, I was right there banging the drum. Eventually, that changed. Here’s how I learned to stop complaining and love college football bowl season.
This is the most wonderful time of the year, at least if that ESPN Capital One Bowl Week commercial is to be believed. The reality of bowl season is players opt out, transfer, and whatnot. Coaches leave too. It can be disjointed.
In that sense, college football bowl season isn’t the same as it was in the past. Nothing is though. The sport is changing, probably for the worse. But the games are still the games. Maybe the stakes are less on the surface. In reality, these games matter to those playing. Okay, so some teams don’t show up. But for others, this is their playoff.
From New Mexico State and Idaho fans storming to the field to countless amazing moments from games that few saw and less remember, bowl games are what makes the sport special.
It’s also why we need to find a way to keep it going. There is so much uncertainty surrounding college football but without these games, we lose a holiday tradition. At the end of the day, it’s not perfect, but it’s still something. When you realize how much it does matter to the fans and players, it is a tradition worth keeping.
