Mexican soccer fans just can’t quit anti-gay chanting. The Mexico National Men’s Soccer team’s 3-0 loss to the USA in the Concacaf Nations League semifinal was called off by the referee due to supporters yelling that word at goalkeeper Matt Turner. This is seemingly the millionth time it has happened.
Look, there is no reason to argue if it is a slur, discriminatory or anything else. Society as a whole has determined the word isn’t cool to use—end of discussion. Don’t roll out these lame, half-assed defenses. It is time for Mexican soccer fans to either grow up and get with the program or go away.
If anti-gay chanting is more important than watching the actual game, then stay at home and yell at the television. That’s it. That’s the solution. Keep your bigotry in your house where it won’t get soccer matches canceled or your team disqualified. Of course, acting like a pleasant human being is also an option.
This entire ordeal is nothing but teenage immaturity. Mexican soccer fans are acting stubborn for no reason other than it’s what they want to do. I get it. This is the kind of thing we all did when we were 17 and thought no one could tell us anything.
The difference is that I went to college, where I learned when it was okay to act immaturely and when I needed to behave myself for the greater good. Eventually, you must act like an adult at times even if you don’t want to.
What makes this all the more baffling is the fact the Mexican Football Federation, CONCACAF and just about everyone connected to soccer has tried to tell fans to shape up or ship out. You have to feel bad for the players who just want to represent their country. At this point, it is hard to see what more can be done apart from banning supporters.
Congrats Mexican soccer fans. I’m sure chanting a slur at opposing goalkeepers is totally worth not being able to watch your team.
