Are hearing all this talk about Mike White and feeling déjà vu? No, that’s not a glitch in the matrix. We are literally reliving the same exact scenario from last season. Sure, Zach Wilson was injured in 2021 and this time around the quarterback was benched. But that doesn’t change the fact we’ve seen this movie before.
White came in last season and unexpectedly tore up a poor Bengals defense. And yes, Cincinnati was not good at that time. Anyway, everyone started freaking out and proclaiming Mike White was going to be a franchise quarterback for the New York Jets.
He proceeded to get smashed by the Colts the following week and wasn’t heard from again for more than a year. By the way, a simple look at recent backup QB breakouts made it easy to see why White wasn’t the answer. We’ll take our victory lap later.
Despite all that, the same thing is happening once more. Everyone is championing a guy who opened the season as the Jets third-string quarterback based on one game versus an awful defense.

Monday Night Countdown is the worst offender of Mike White déjà vu
Mike White déjà vu was being peddled on Monday Night Countdown like gangbusters. All they wanted to talk about was how New York should start White for the remainder of the season. Look, NFL talking heads are normally really stupid, but this was next level ridiculousness.
And it somehow got worse. Adam Schefter did bring up the fact Mike White had one good game in 2021 before crashing a week later and heading back to the bench. It should have been an opportunity for common sense to prevail.
Did that happen? Nope.
Instead, Alex Smith and Robert Griffin continued to talk about White as if he was the answer. In some ways, it makes sense for two quarterbacks with an underwhelming body of work to think this. Hell, RGIII made a career out of a few good games.
As bad as this was, it’s going to get worse. There are six more days of football pundits babbling on and on while we all cope with Mike White déjà vu. The only thing more annoying is Tony Dungy doing color commentary.
