The following shouldn’t even need to be said, but apparently it has to. Geno Smith is not winning the NFL MVP this year. Or any year, for that matter. The hyperbole surrounding the former second-round pick is out of control. And not in a good way.
Let’s start by stating the obvious. Smith has played a pair of the worst defenses in the NFL over the past two weeks. Has everyone forgotten his middling performances in the first two weeks of the season? Seriously, the quarterback didn’t surpass 200 yards in a game until week three.
However, the way pundits and Twitter gush over the man who preferred watching movies instead of attending team functions back in the day is crazy. You would think Smith has put up Tom Brady in 2007 or Peyton Manning in 2013 numbers. He’s not even close.

Smith has six touchdown passes and a single rushing score in four games this season. He is tenth in the league in passing yards. Oh, and by the way, the Seattle Seahawks are 2-2 with a loss to the lowly Falcons. How is this even up for discussion?
Geno Smith is not winning the NFL MVP. Hell, he hasn’t been particularly impressive in 2022 despite what football talking heads say. The Detroit Lions are making every offense look like MVPs so far. Tim Tebow could probably light them up. They are that hopeless.
The absolute worst part of the Geno Smith for NFL MVP chatter is that those spreading it know the premise is ridiculous. There is no reason for this to be a discussion and we all realize it. And yet pundits continue to push the narrative as if they aren’t speaking about a journeyman quarterback on a below average football team.
This wouldn’t be so annoying if those talking heads were ever held to account. Two weeks ago, the Seahawks were an afterthought with poor QB play. Now, Geno Smith is an NFL MVP candidate. And two weeks in the future when he fails, the subject will never get mentioned again.
