RIP Yahoo Fantasy message boards…we’ll never understand why you’re gone

Yahoo Fantasy Message Boards
Yahoo took away our message boards and all we got was this lame statement

Yahoo Fantasy message boards are gone. This was something I discovered shortly after completing my sole fantasy baseball public league draft. It’s another case of the one-time greatest platform continuing to kill off features users loved and replace them with some paid service no intelligent person would purchase.

First, draft chats are eliminated for no reason in particular. Now, Yahoo Fantasy message boards get the axe. No wonder Sleeper is poaching countless leagues and managers despite being a significantly inferior platform. At least they have the decency to listen to users.

Meanwhile, Yahoo insists on giving us the middle finger instead. Look, the message boards aren’t vital to playing fantasy sports of any kind. Hell, I can only think of three reasons I would actually use them:

  1. I wanted to trigger other managers with some nonsense. This usually involved creating a character that would make them upset or uncomfortable.
  2. I wanted to get the medal for message board posts. Yahoo medals remain serious business for me.
  3. Some extremely dodgy stuff was happening in a public league, and I wanted to get in on the fun.

None of those are essential to being in a league. But holy hell, did the Yahoo Fantasy message boards provide entertainment. Given the steady stream of negative feedback, other users had real reasons to use them, though.

Why are the Yahoo Fantasy message boards gone?

That’s a good question. The Yahoo Fantasy message boards being phased out wouldn’t be an issue had the company replaced them with something. They are not. Instead, their message continued some general platitudes about how they were investing in ‘Fantasy Chat’ as the primary means of league communication.

For starters, the Yahoo fantasy chat feature is nothing more than an afterthought. I just checked mine and no messages have been sent in or out since 2019. And even when it was used, responses were scarce. Secondly, if the investment was happening, it would be done by now. Maybe they have an intern on the case, but anyone expecting major changes is a fool.

Let’s be honest, Yahoo Fantasy is slowly devolving into Best Buy. It is a place that has gone from being fun and exciting to kind of dark and creepy. You’re not even sure why it’s around anymore and going inside is super depressing.

At this point, the platform is probably on life support. Losing the message boards is another nail in the coffin for what was, in its heyday, the place to play fantasy sports.
