What’s the point of the AT&T commercials starring Lily?

AT&T commercials Lily
The eye lines here are a dead giveaway that Coach K isn't in the same room as Lily

It feels like you can’t watch three minutes of television without seeing a Subway refresh ad, something pimping cryptocurrency and one of those AT&T commercials starring Lily. They are all terrible in their own unique way. But at least the first two make sense.

What’s the point of the AT&T commercials starring Lily? They aren’t funny or memorable. None of them makes you want to change your cell phone plan. These spots are wildly ineffective by just about any measurement you could possibly come up with.

Seriously, no person is watching one of these 30-second adverts and thinking to themselves, “Hey, that AT&T gets me. They are the cell phone provider I’ve always wanted.”

Not every TV commercial needs to be a hard sell. Nor should it be. But it shouldn’t grate on you like the sound of nails on a chalkboard. And when Lily shows up, that is the sensation viewers have. She gives that Alpha M loser a run for his money at this point.

Additionally, not every advertisement can be as legendary as Happy Honda Days or Terry Tate Office Linebacker. However, releasing something that ensures viewers don’t immediately hate your brand is not that difficult. Arby’s serves terrible food, but at least their TV spots are watchable.

The worst thing about the AT&T commercials starring Lily

It’s bad enough that the AT&T commercials starring Lily don’t really have a point. But the worst thing about them is the blatant use of a green screen. It is so painfully obvious she isn’t anywhere near Matthew Stafford or Mike Krzyzewski. Don’t believe me?

Just look at the wonky camera angles used during these spots. You never get a straight shot of Lily and the celebrity. This leads to the worst thing about commercials. The lines are woefully delivered.

The volume, tone, infliction and facial expressions give away the fact these two people aren’t talking to one another. As a viewer, it is annoying to sit through. Not only does the premise of the ad I’m being forced to watch suck, but your multi-billion dollar company couldn’t even afford to have the stars film it together. No wonder AT&T commercials starring Lily are awful.
