D.K. Metcalf without the ball, get used to seeing this a lot in 2022

Nobody, not even D.K. Metcalf himself, can be happy about his fantasy football outlook in 2022 because, in a word, it’s bleak. For reasons no one can fully understand, Geno Smith opens the season as starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks. The situation would only be marginally better if Drew Lock manages to see the field.

And yet, Metcalf is the 21st wide receiver off the board in Yahoo mock drafts. Teammate Tyler Lockett is the 41st wideout taken on average which makes sense as a low-risk flyer. He also had that 12-catch game with Smith at the helm, so that’s something I suppose.

A few fantasy football experts justify taking Metcalf this season by pointing to the three touchdown passes he caught from Smith. However, if you take out the fluke score against the Saints, his longest reception with the former Jets draft pick under center was 16 yards. That stat is worrisome.

This solidifies the fact D.K. Metcalf has an underwhelming fantasy football outlook heading into the season. Sure, he’ll get some catches here and there. But he is going to be touchdown dependent most weeks and who knows how many points that Seattle offense will muster on any given Sunday.

However, there is another element to D.K. Metcalf and his fantasy football outlook that should also be considered. Drafting him as a WR2 means he’s a must start part of your roster. Most teams can’t afford to take a player in the fifth or sixth round and play matchups with him.

That is probably the best-case scenario with the former Ole Miss receiver. There are going to be a lot of weeks where he finishes with two or three catches and next to no yards. Championship-caliber sides will not be starting that kind of player.

There really is no reason to take Metcalf in the fifth round of your fantasy football draft or honestly at all. It is far more likely he becomes a sunk cost than a league winner. Don’t shackle yourself to this troublesome risk.
