In a world of bad reboots, can That ‘90s Show be good?

That ‘90s Show actually be good

I want That ‘90s Show to be good. Everyone does. But has there been a good TV reboot? Like ever? People will try to say The Conners or Hawaii 5-O. However, you are grasping at straws if that’s the best-case scenario. I have no time for any person claiming Fuller House is watchable.

What worries me about That ‘90s Show has to be the thoroughly horrendous Murphy Brown reboot that most people have probably forgotten about even though it happened in 2018. The original show was exceptional and should have been left to rest in peace. Instead, it was dragged back to life only to be killed in cold blood. It would suck for That ‘70s Show to suffer the same fate.

The issue with many television reboots is time. The times have changed but the characters we love haven’t. Sure, they may look older and come with backstories to fill in the age gap. But nothing feels all that different. And the writing is almost always worse.

Other reboots, especially sitcoms, are just boring. For example, Girl Meets World was wildly uninteresting. Why even tie it into Boy Meets World and then market it to fans of the show in the first place? It was a totally separate, and lesser, program in which the actors playing Cory and Topanga happened to be in.

All of this being said, I still have hope for That ‘90s Show and it is because That ‘70s Show was one of the few TV shows parents could watch with their kids. Everyone got it. Bumping up the timeline 20 years should ensure there is both nostalgia for returning viewers and relatability for new ones.

Secondly, the premise makes sense to have the old cast involved without overexposing them. It must be noted that Hyde not being there is for the best. Seriously, there is no way he would have been alive in 1995. And for Danny Masterson’s sake, let’s hope they make his absence as embarrassing as possible. Something along the lines of, “It’s shame Hyde died from a crack overdose while turning tricks in an Arby’s bathroom.”

Apart from terrible writing, the other concern about That ‘90s Show is the new cast may lack charisma. Given how heavily the trailers have relied on Red and Kitty, you have to wonder about the next round of basement dwellers. Namely, they don’t seem very 1990s. In fact, none of them are very interesting at all.

So, can That ‘90s Show actually be good? It is not impossible. However, everything we know about TV reboots points to it being a flop.
