T.J. Hockenson seems destined to be overdrafted in 2023 fantasy football drafts

T.J. Hockenson 2023 fantasy football drafts
History says drafting this man early next season isn't a good idea

After he finished this season as TE2 in both half and full PPR formats, T.J. Hockenson seems destined to be overdrafted in 2023 fantasy football drafts. For whatever reason, managers love to shoot their shot when it comes to the tight end position, passing up high-potential running backs and wide receivers to fill their starting lineup.

Unless the person you are taking is Travis Kelce, it is almost always a bad move. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end was TE1 this year and outscored Hockenson by almost 100 points. The difference between the now Minnesota Vikings player at TE2 and Juwan Johnson at TE13 was 60 points.

Of course, there is a benefit in that. But not in the third or fourth round where T.J. Hockenson is likely to be taken in 2023 fantasy football drafts. This is usually where there is run on non-Kelce tight ends like Mark Andrews, Darren Waller or George Kittle.

There is more value in drafting one of the many potential WR2s or borderline RB2s still on the board and grabbing someone later on. You can also make a strong case for selecting Kelce in the second round. But chasing players who on average will only score three-ish more points per week than late round flyers isn’t ideal.

Let’s put this another way. Who would you have rather had in 2022 based on where they were drafted: Mark Andrews or CeeDee Lamb/Tyreek Hill? George Kittle or Josh Jacobs/Terry McLaurin? And those are best case scenario tight ends. Kyle Pitts was going in the first four rounds in most leagues.

Since 2018, only one tight end has overperformed expectations in the second to fourth round range. That was Mark Andrew in 2021. Maybe Hockenson puts up similar numbers for the Minnesota Vikings next year. He has been a top-five player at the position in his two healthy seasons. However, he seems destined to be overdrafted in 2023 fantasy football drafts.
