A roster crunch is coming for those who play their fantasy football year-round. The rookie draft and players graduating off the taxi squad mean space is going to be at a premium over the next few months. And with that, an important question must be asked. Is Rob Gronkowski worth stashing in dynasty?
The last time we saw him on an NFL field, he was still a top-6 tight end in fantasy. And while Gronkowski will be 34 when next season rolls around, Travis Kelce is only 150 days younger and is a lock to be taken in the second round of most drafts. Of course, the Chiefs star did play in 2022.
On the surface, it would be easy to say Rob Gronkowski isn’t worth stashing in dynasty. However, he keeps farting around when it comes to potentially playing. There have already been murmurings he could return in 2023. We also know the tight end almost unretired last season.
This isn’t a case of some manager in your league desperately holding on to Andrew Luck. You can make a strong argument that Rob Gronkowski is worth stashing in dynasty. It is just going to be one annoying ride. For example, he both ruled out unretiring and then joked about coming back in the same day.
We also know that Gronkowski will likely have no issues getting back into playing shape given he already took a season off and returned without issue. Hell, I’d take a retired Gronk over starting Mike Gesicki, Logan Thomas, Dawson Knox or other tight end streamers who only score when they are being started against you.
Tom Brady’s retirement does throw a spanner in the works here. Is Gronkowski really going to play for another quarterback? It would seem unlikely. Then again, if he got super bored and Joe Burrow or Josh Allen came calling, there is at least a conversation that will probably be had.
As painful as it might be, Rob Gronkowski is still worth stashing in dynasty assuming your roster isn’t crazy deep. A lack of serviceable options at tight end means his upside is too great to pass up.
